The Setauket Yacht Club has been teaching young people and adults to sail for over 35 years on Port Jefferson Harbor and Long Island's North Shore. The success of our program is best measured by the accomplishments of our graduates. It has been a joy to watch young sailors advance from basic sailing to advanced racing. Participants in our programs, as adults, have gone on to crew in the America's Cup competition and many are associated with the sailing industry, while others are leaving their mark in Club Racing all over Long Island Sound.  All of our instructors are graduates of SYC's sailing programs.  We offer basic programs tailored to meet the needs of the students, and also have advanced offerings for the more experienced sailors.   Please consider the Setauket Yacht Club as your first step to a lifetime of sailing. We plan to make it a fun summer for all.

We are offering the Junior Sailing in two week sessions to accomodate your summer schedule. It is suggested that you enroll your child in two consecutive sessions so that they may develop a good working knowledge of the principles of sailing. Our "beginning to sail" course is designed for children 8 - 11 and is given in Optimist prams. These boats are 8 feet long and are safe and forgiving of the mistakes beginners are likely to make. There is one child per boat and all of our students are followed by a motorized "chase" boat.  For children 12 - 17 lessons are in Blue J's. These boats are 14 feet long and there will be two students in each boat. Blue J's have been used throughout the country as one design racing boats. Students will be paired according to their ability and experience. For those more advanced students, minimum of 3 years experience, we offer lessons in boats called 420's. These boats are used in high school and college competition and are very responsive. Classroom instruction will include safety on the water, parts of the boat, boat handling, wind direction, knot tying, racing tactics and basic sailing vocabulary.
